Опис

Troyan monastery

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God or, as it is more commonly called, the Troyan Monastery is the third largest monastery in Bulgaria. It is located in the northern part of the country in the Balkan Mountains and was founded no later than the end of the 16th century. The monastery is situated on the banks of the Cherni Osam near Oreshak, a village 10 km from Troyan in Lovech Province, and is a popular tourist destination.
Troyan monastery must have been in existence long before the l5th century, as legends suggest. It flourished again about the year 1600. From the oldest church it is only the throne stone that has been preserved. Towards the beginning of the l9th century the monastic brotherhood re-erected the monastery. In 1835 master Constantine built a wonderful main church which was painted by Zahari Zograph in 1847-1849. The spacious residential wings with roomy verandas were built in 1835-1855. In 1865 a tower was raised in the monastery courtyard with a winter church and a belfry on the last floor.
The Troyan Monastery is also, since the 17th century, the home of one of the holiest icons in Bulgarian Orthodoxy, the Three-Handed Virgin.
Many people make a pilgrimage to this monastery on St. George's Day because of an icon of St. George in the main church.

Lovech

The town is located on both sides of Ossam river at about 150 km northeast from the capital city of Sofia. Lovech has a beautiful location, with many parks and places to rest. In Stratesh Park, the highest place in the town, there are a great number of lilac bushes, easily seen from the whole town, which are a wonderful view in the spring. Due to this, Lovech is well-known as the town of the lilacs. Lovech is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. The symbol of the town is the Covered bridge, built in 19 c. by the Bulgarian master Kolio Ficheto. The bridge is unique on the Balkans and could be compared with the famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Other places of interest in Lovech are The Varosha architectural and historical reserve, with Drasova and Rashova memorial houses, The house museum of the Apostol of freedom – Vasil Levski, Hissarya fortress, Stratesh park and others.
